a member of AlumNUS
went to collect my graduation robe from campus. As usual, any event would attract advertisers. In this case, they were the banks (alumni credit and debit cards by SCB and DBS), NUSS (the graduate club), plaque makers and photography companies, etc.
received the invitation package and AlumNUS card too. Basically, it wraps up my undergraduate study with NUS. I would be good if i can return and continue my Masters programme there too - if there's such a chance.

i had to put a question mark, because i'm simply feeling uncertain of my statistics results. Other than that...

Walked it so many times...my university days started rather badly.
i left a relationship before i matriculated into computing, that was in mid 2006. It was quite a silent blow, because nothing happened initially. The confidence i carried over from poly was misplaced - my studies went southward with pressure from work and the loss of a person that was close to me. Work weren't busy, but i dwelled in it, to forget what i went through. With this mis-focus, everything nearly crumbled down just before my 1st exam. Only a few will know what really happened.
over the next 4 semesters it was really discouraging to pull my points up from the bottom. Still, i have tried and tried. After the dismal first semester (plus academic warning from Vice Dean), i started to immerse myself in undergraduate life, with some tough modules such as CS3214 and many interesting non CS modules, SSB2216 HRM, etc. Deadlines come and go, my friends and i felt we were chasing them all the time. What a stark difference from poly where deadlines can be comfortably met. This semester, i had only 4 days to study before exams started.
the point is no longer at pit bottom, but i wished i have started off in a better state.
in a flash of an eye (not that fast, but it felt so), 2.5 years have passed. In this last semester, i didn't want to leave. Things progressed too quickly; i felt i spent too little time in campus. There wasn't much involvement because of my work outside and i opted out of hostel stays. With my poor results, i didn't get to go for overseas exchange too. But what has to end has to end, and i really hope my results can make it.
i'll leave the goodbye out until 23rd comes. Good luck to all peeps who filed for graduation.

exam week coming, post CS3266 thoughts
finally, it's time for exams.
had mixed feelings after the CS3266 presentation to the lecturer in charge. I feel we have underperformed, but the emphasis was unfortunately rather skewed towards aesthetics. My fear is the concentration on eye candies such as those brought forward to us during the presentation (and we didn't have it) has brought neglect to more gradeworthy technical elements, such as MVC and page security. We heard it's standard, but i'm definitely doubtful as to whether everybody had really done so. Furthermore, these weren't validated during the presentation.
anyone could have done embedding of Google Maps in less than an hour, but things such as security couldn't be done as readily as the former.
i feel our efforts were directed wrongly, and i would accept this (not sure for my partner). We just hope in future, the general direction can be better communicated from the start.
all in all, there was a bittersweet feeling of this experience. Bitter because the evaluator's expectation wasn't in the same direction (read: not a difference in the level of expectation, just that the emphasis was not what we thought of), sweet because my partner and i managed to complete the project without much problems in a short time.

have been quite occupied with my school work, and _____.
cs3266's ticketing system is causing quite a fair amount of stress. Yes, it's an e-commerce project, but closer to what Sistic, GV, Cathay, etc are doing. So you can guess, the difficulty should be on the logic programming for the seating and reservation subsystem.
statistics seem to be fine, but as we progress through the weeks i think the learning curve will get steeper.
i don't know what i'm doing for the other 2 modules, and i hope i can address the problem issues quickly.
having meals below my place are a problem now - heard a fire in one of the stalls that went unsupervised caused an explosion and short circuit. The whole place looked okay, but it seems there were much damage in the stallholders' area - electrical cables burnt, blackish water around the kopitiam. Chicken chop was cursing the kopitiam to close the day after he paid $0.50 more for his chicken chop, and he got his wish. Damn funny...
sent sp to her place just now. Apparently she got a bad scare due to two friendly people following her from bus stop all the way to the same corridor. I was having dupper at the market, walked over and accompanied her up. As much as i want to put on a brave front, but there's always a risk lah. Luckily the duo wasn't there anymore. CS3267 - first lecture
i thought this was worth a mention, so posting up some pictures.
the lecturer, Dr. Klarissa Chang promised an interesting approach to the module, which focuses on a managerial view on social systems in the corporate setting. Social systems simply mean Web 2.0 solutions - the popular local picks include Friendster, Facebook, Flickr, Google Maps, etc.
the expectations can differ, depending on why we took the module for. For us, it was a new module and we wanted to fulfill elective requirements. So we were pretty speechless on hearing the seemingly high expectations. But still, we'll try to give whatever we can.

notebook tender for NUS 08/09
one sentence about this year's tender - it sucks.
maybe the models up there are still in draft or incomplete - there are only models that hover around 2.45kg (heavy) or another extreme, around 1.0kg (too light).
the 1.0kg models are from Asus (EEE PC) and Acer (Aspire One). This is perhaps sufficient for business students or anyone who seldom do heavy duty tasks. But for Computing brothers and sisters, they are way underpowered. So upgrade to the powerful models and lug them up and down for classes?
next problem will be the processors offered - the Intel Core 2 Duo T9000 series (still) on the Centrino platform. SMU has already went ahead with the Centrino 2 platform using the Core 2 Duo P8000 series, with the latest 3 antenna Wireless N adapter, DDR3 memories and what not. Don't see why we couldn't obtain the latest hardware to go with our offers, given the size of the student population.
i'm disappointed at the relevant department who prepared and approved the tender. It does not fully address the entire university's needs. What a difference from last year.
there goes my plan to get my 2nd set from campus.
update: i emailed someone from Computer Centre. This senior system analyst replied me with 4 emails each containing a 1 sentence reply, when i sent him only 1 email. So much for email etiquette.
anyway, he said the website is still being updated. That's why Group 2A (below 2.1kg) is missing. But he confirmed something - Lenovo X series is gone. No more.

we thought our outcomes sure chui, will definitely waste $400. On the SAP website, the course is listed at a cost of $7900. I think they are posting the un-discounted price, lah. Anyway it's structured in a way that if you study, shouldn't fail.
spent wednesday and thurs studying 12 hours each day, really underprepared. Amazing i would say...

exam #3, exam #4 - the end of this sem
exams ended on wednesday. Didn't blog until now cause' i wanted to scan in and blog about my helpsheets, in particularly for the management module.

Microscopic words, had to take the exam without wearing glassespeople who saw the 2nd helpsheet had only words of surprise. lol...but it saved 3 lives. Mine, zw and steve's. In only a few hours to spare for the exam (math paper was 5-7pm, management paper was 9am the next morning), we split the whole textbook of 15 chapters up into 3. Then summarised in max 1 page per chapter. Compiled into 1 double sided sheet of 8 pages/side.
because the paper was mainly testing on key terms and wordings, the helpsheet really helped.
amazing eh?
then after the last paper, it was work. After that, went down to the usual place to have my korean meal and bought 4 hard disks (2 * 250GB, 1 * 320GB and 1 *500GB) worth $433. All these not my property though. With 2kg of metal, going home was the only next option... had a can of beer and dozed like a pig for hours.
then just now was still work. But spent an hour or so scrubbing the internal organs of my aircon after getting home. Just done with it:

Your aircon appears to be clean? Look into the inside...an airconditioner is the same as a fan. Other than giving out cooler air, the rest is the same - in terms of dirt. If i'm a technician, will gladly rip that fan blower out and bring it to the toilet for a good wash. Actually, this aircon system is already 2 years old. Time to ask Gain City for system maintenance, but not cheap.
now will be some reading on Vista. Gonna finally migrate to Vista for my laptop and PC, but as a techy person i gotta read up on the background information 1st. Plus slipstreaming service packs into Windows XP, Vista (yeah) and Office.

mug a quickie

just now met sijie at my lift lobby; she was going to pass the stuff to my mum. Then we sat down at the kopitiam, i was going to dine and she was going to wait for her father. Interestingly, the kopi-sao i'm familiar with passed by, then something funny happened:

*whispering using lips* nu peng you ar?
zm:
*sweat, whisper back* bu shi bu shi x4!!
kopi-sao:
*nodding* shi la shi la!!
sijie:
*noticed our silent communication, then face turned kanchiong* auntie, bu shi la!!
we all laughed... lolz. She's afraid of these stuff cause' she often dines with her Elvis there. I don't wish to get hacked for no reason too.
the zi char's boss saw me, then asked me about sat's dinner (no seats, had to take cabs to another place). I had quite a bad impression because of his reply to my father then, which i could roughly understand in cantonese. He apologized for the situation, so i was surprised. Then when his sis came over with my fried rice, she apologized too (!).
then we saw Anthony, Wenqun's bro. Friend, how come your brother's hairstyle looked rather odd? Anyway if he put on his uniform with 1x crab, i bet people will be shocked beyond words.

projects (almost) over

for the GIS, i did the add/edit/delete of medical facilities. Then i took up some unexpected stuff, such as login, access control (using FormsAuthentication, a very neat feature in .net 2.0), feedback, etc.
luckily this time round, there were 2 sample projects for viewing. Modifications are always easier than creating from scratch, so development time was drastically reduced.
then went with Nelson for makan at Clementi. This marked the end of all classes; study week next.
was listening to 许茹芸 and 阿穆隆's duet - 男人女人. I tend to agree with this line -

luckily this time round, there were 2 sample projects for viewing. Modifications are always easier than creating from scratch, so development time was drastically reduced.
then went with Nelson for makan at Clementi. This marked the end of all classes; study week next.

1st week of poly term
my life has been undergoing time warps recently. The load of projects and assignments came after the 2nd math quiz, making me quite lethargic, ironically. I'm supposed to gather my energy and work on them right? Those who know me well... know that this is dead wrong. That's why Melvin calls me a slacker, for a reason. shh...
workplace
so, my 'mother school' and workplace was extremely busy for this week. On monday, there were 7 night classes on. Just now, there were 9 night classes. Going to faint for the next 15 weeks...
had new colleagues onboard, and as all army guys know - newbies have to suffer for a while. So Anthony (DIT05) had to man the 2nd helpdesk created for freshies, while the old birds take care of the main helpdesk. He's quite motivated, and i was like him, staying beyond my alloted working hours to finish up things. But i'm been at it for a loooooong time, so my pace is slowing down.

j text-ed me far away from singapore, at another place in Asia. He was apparently going to let go. My friend, if you're reading this entry, remember my words. We friends can advise you based on whatever we heard from you, but you cannot take our advice alone. In the r/s, there are only 2 people. The rest are outsiders. And try not to complicate matters by operating a ferry service. Don't break ba chiu's heart unless your mind is set... i'm sure my friend got my meanings. :)

i just received the video clip of myself giving the short talk (an assignment) 3 weeks ago. Not bad... lol.

Natural not??the long talk just finished today. Zw asked steve a question for the latter's presentation, and steve decided to pay us back by asking 'harsh' questions. At least this 'harsh' word was defined by my evaluator, not me!! But well, we all know at the end of the day, no feelings will be hurt.

- go for dental
- get a hairstylist.. wanna plant some gold strands in my hair

facebooking
this week was a busy one. Because of the 2nd MA1312 math quiz. Topics covered were applications of differentiation (those cone, sphere or cylinder questions, you know, plus Rolle's Theorem, Mean Value Theorem, L'Hospital Rule) and integration (definite and indefinite integrals, integration by substitution).

don't know what i'm talking about? That's why my study life is paradoxically tough. I don't think my friends studying private degrees are studying calculus, so they don't have such headaches. Imagine trying to understand mathematics at 25 yo. My hair is dropping faster than it grows.
out of boredom at the helpdesk, i decided to create a facebook account. It's fun, great, and miles better than Friendster. The application integration is simply thumbs up. Having fun with 2 favourite applications, "Friends for Sale" and "fluff Friends". Buying up all the pretty girls... hehe.
today is a slow day at home. Hope to get things moving again tomorrow...

presentation's over!
to wake up on time i forced myself to sleep at the sofa from 4-6am. If i went to my bed, rest assured i'll be running out from my house and to the roadside (for a taxi). My peer reviews will definitely get 1 (out of 5 or 10) for punctuality. =x
the method really works, or maybe i was really anxious about it. Was rehearsing in one of my labs, running the full powerpoint and my laptop doing the system demo. My audience? The air and chairs in front of me. I thought i went over the script for 5 times, until i was quite confident. No choice, i was the one starting the demo and have to make an impact.
so i reached school early, even enough for a meal. Got tea and mineral water, then went up to the exec classroom. Waixin was already there, and while changing into formalwear steve called me. He thought i was still on bed. =p
the presentation was alright, except TY and WK uncovered some bugs, especially for my module. Also, my hard work on the navigation menu was kinda wasted, since there was a bug. However the functionality is there, just needed to polish it up. Midway at zw's part, the laptop hung ...! Really bad because everything just froze. Eventually they were quite accomodating and we continued after restarting. Kelvin was the entertainer during the "commercial break" as usual.. lolz.

then the demo ended. Had quite a good laugh with CH outside, however we heard that the next presenting group encountered deployment problems and had to stay overnight. The feeling really suck, especially it's already after submission and into study week. Good luck to them...
