the great confetti search

was anticipating my facial this morning. After i knew my face might be red after the wash, i was rather scared. But had no chance to see the result today because da jie was unwell. Hey, when you recover we shall go ok =D

then i crashed back on my bed. Have been tired easily for past few days.

met jem and 2 ladies. The great confetti search began in bugis, and we amazingly walked to dohby ghaut. Power man...

Dined here

the pin si restaurant at Yishun was fully booked for a wedding dinner. But had nice laksa and chicken wings at the nearby kopitiam. Thumbs up la, thanks gy.

After looking at the Samsung Omnia, i think i'm loving my Diamond more.
No offence to Omnia owners =)

so tired. I think i'm going back to my bed now. Good night.

work + toy fair + ndp + nuss

morning was work. Wanted to cab down, but in the end better not. Having this habit is dangerous... and harder to fall asleep too. Took the usual vehicles, and reached there 5 minutes later only. But the contractors came only an hour later. Aiyo... anyway turned on the music in one of the lab and proceeded to give all the rodents a good scrub.

anthony came by today. He was bored after the confinement in BMT, so brought his stockpile of candies for his classmate colleague. Very good lah; i still recall when i first booked out the first thing was to find her and go shopping. Good old memories...

i promised to meet him later at the toy fair at 3pm, but at the time i just finished my meal at cwp. Oops, we shall meet again my friend. Anyway went home, washed up and dined at my usual place at Simlim Sq. Then made my way down to the toy fair.

no keroro! Bandai, why never bring in!!!

Tofu! I saw one blank tofu, actually i'd be interested to get that.

Some water programme. I feel it's a waste of fuel though...
those servicemen were idling on the water.

Really need a tripod for night shots meh? Can don't want?

met up with SY, one new friend from NUSS. She gave me valuable advice on career options, i thank her for that. I think i have to recognise i'm leaving NUS soon, it's time to sit down and plan my career options proper. Of course, i wouldn't want to idle around in school by failing modules (again). Better to be out in the field as soon as i can.

time to do some networking and publish my CV. Should i setup a website for this alone?

chinese on htc diamond

yesterday night had another breakthrough - installed pocketmusic and had good (not as great as my iriver) quality music through my Sony Ericsson DS980. And i dropped a chinese font in without installing the problematic CE-star. What nice achievements... lol.

Pocketmusic 5.1

Nice chinese fonts lah.

Was late for duty... didn't even know i had one.

This phone is up for sale!

sold my Samsung U600 away at 10% of the original price. Heart pain, but better to sell it off. Now polishing my HTC Touch for 2nd sale.

the phone

was spending the past few nights understanding the phone. Now that it's done, it's time to show the pictures.

before showing the pictures, a short discussion on the market situation might be useful.

market side of things
recently, the True Number Portability system was implemented (13 June 2008). As anticipated there were aggressive marketing campaigns from the 3 major telcos to attract new customers through promotions, such as free 6 months subscription from Starhub. Singtel followed. M1 introduced a new product, which is the DIY plan. However on closer look, it's not really for me since the base cost is already $16.05 with only 50 minutes outgoing airtime and 150 sms/mms.

how about existing customers? There wasn't much to do, except to offer handsets at great prices to tempt customers to stay with them for another 2 years. And offering combo plans that seemed to be attractive to consumers.

M1 and Starhub held roadshows after the PC Show 2008, to capitalize on the spending habits of our locals. And they are rather successful, i would say. As for the incumbent Singtel, it has not organised a similar roadshow thereafter - maybe it is depending on iPhone 3G to help increase sales later.

evolution in PDA phones
as some geeks may realise, the PDA phone market is getting hot since Apple's introduction of iPhone into the market segment. I'm not a fan of Apple's products, thus i can only say iPhone did what it did - shake up the segment.

because of the shakeup, we saw certain brands weakening; O2 (now MWg) and HP. Asus is trying hard to penetrate the segment with a variety of products. HTC/Dopod became the dominant player in the segment since it had much experience in the design and manufacturing of phones for O2, HP, Dopod itself, etc. Apple is gaining foothold due to its positive branding and intuitiveness of the iPhone.

many months ago, HTC came out with the Touch product line, with Touch and Touch Enhanced being introduced. It was meant to provide an alternative to the iPhone, since it provided the TouchFLO add-on to Windows Mobile. Then Cruise followed, and now Diamond. Diamond features the TouchFLO 3D, which takes over the Today screen completely. There are many things the user can do with this application - view calendar items, flip photos, listen to music, etc. There is almost no need to purchase expensive applications, making things much easier for the general consumers at large.

Samsung has been making WM phones for some time, however their products were intended more for business users. It recently introduced the Omnia i900, which looks very much like iPhone, except that it runs on WM.

the competition, of course is between HTC Diamond and Samsung Omnia. I feel both products shouldn't be compared, though.

future trends of segment
HTC is set to introduce more products under the Touch product line, which includes the Touch Pro, which appears to be a supercharged Diamond with QWERTY keyboard.

Sony Ericsson is jumping into the fray, although rather late, with the Xperia X1. HTC is the actual manufacturer for SEX1.

Apple is of course introducing iPhone 3G through Singtel in 3 months time. Thus in September, expect another price war between the planned products from the 3 and maybe few more makers.

Comparison of graphics quality between Diamond and Touch Enhanced

TouchFLO 3D
do note for novice users - the application is actually an item in the Today screen. When you show it in Today screen, the rest of the items are removed. Essentially, it's a nice looking skin over the Windows Mobile operating system that provides linkages to the various components, such as calendar, messages, photos, music, etc.

since it's the first version of the TF3D, the latter is not customisable as yet. For example, the tabs cannot be shifted or removed. The calendar listing cannot be customised, such as showing next X days. Replying of the sms is not done in TF3D as well.

it's also a resource guzzler. In the first ROM version, the Diamond was struggling despite a speedy 500MHz class processor, and going through the tabs was laggy and time consuming. Many registry "tweaks" had to be done in order for the device to be usable. In the second ROM version 1.37, the situation improved, although there are still problems. Such as...

- upon incoming SMS and the device is in standby mode, there won't be any notification, except for a message tone. The message tone wasn't even there in the first batch release. The screen stays off, vibration turned off by default. You need to turn the device on, then the alert is shown. A registry tweak is still required to wake the device up upon incoming SMS.

more info of the second ROM here.

- upon full charge, i turned on the phone hoping to see my Today screen. Only to see the bootup screen.... *pout*

cons
i would touch on the cons first, since any product has their shortcomings.

- battery life. Some people detest short battery lives, and i'm one of them. I dislike the idea of the battery going from 100% to 5-10% at the end of the day. It distorts the usability of the device - it's supposed to play music, chat on the phone, surf net with comfortable uptime. If the device dies with only a moderate workload in a day, it's not worth to buy. And Diamond sadly has this problem because of the meagre battery rating of 900mah.

- infancy stage of TF3D. The TouchFLO 3D is expected to be improved by HTC, since this is the first phone featuring it. HTC should be able to deliver a better version in the upcoming Touch Pro, so for those "waiters" there's no harm waiting!

- no external storage. 4GB internal storage is sufficient for me, but i'd prefer expandable storage. For example, i can swap out the external storage and insert it into a card reader for usage at my PC. Samsung's Omnia wins a big margin by offering a 16GB internal storage + microSD slot here.

pros
now some pleasing stuff.

- form factor. The Samsung Omnia is not even close to being lightweight, not even comparable to the ultra-slim series of their product line. Thus the 2 products shouldn't be compared, because the size sets them apart. The Diamond packs a great deal of functionalities into a deadly slim form factor.

- improved camera. Compared to Touch, the 3.2mp offers AF, although there's no flashlight. But the quality has greatly improved. Of course, Samsung Omnia has 5mp!

- VGA screen. The 640x480 graphics is rather brilliant. Look at the comparison photo between Diamond and Touch Enhanced and you get my meaning. If you really have to compare Samsung's Omnia (240x400), yup the latter still loses in this department.

verdict? I'm on the whole happy with the Diamond, and especially since after i removed TouchFLO 3D from the Today screen. It is a decent performer with everything i need now.

what a day

was interested in switching my mobile operator. So decided on StarHub, since there is a good offer for a particular phone. Made an appointment with X to accompany me at 10am, i thought i was going to be really on time this time when something just had to happen -

fallen tree at Woodlands Rd, blocking all lanes towards Bt Panjang.

in the end, took a bus in the opposite direction back to Kranji, then took the same route (but diverted to skip fallen tree section). The bus driver ran out of time as a result, thereafter he floored the accelerator and gave the engine a good push until he reached Bugis. Reached Suntec safely, but 45 minutes later.

queued for a good 4 hours and got what i want. Got a free Nokia handset as well.

when i was claiming my free handset, saw Joyce manning the counter! lol..

shall reveal the phone when i get a screen protector for it...

starhub mobile broadband

thanks to HK who passed me his data sim.

got a modem separately. Come to think of it, not very worth it. Should have signed up with singtel for their 1mbps plan at $11/month and get the free Huawei E169 modem.

3G broadband is here

An irony, using Singtel labeled Huawei E220 modem

the speed is decent an hour ago. Not sure how it will perform in the evening.

SAP test

finally!

finally!

finally!

it's officially done and over!

we thought our outcomes sure chui, will definitely waste $400. On the SAP website, the course is listed at a cost of $7900. I think they are posting the un-discounted price, lah. Anyway it's structured in a way that if you study, shouldn't fail.

spent wednesday and thurs studying 12 hours each day, really underprepared. Amazing i would say...

i don't know how they total up everything...

sidoarjo's man-made mud flow / volcano

i came across pictures of this mud flow. It was created 2 years ago, on 28 May 2006 due to faulty drilling procedures. If you think the mud flow is a small hole in the ground, read this: that crater has the ability to extricate 50-60 olympic swimming pools worth of mud in a day! Mind you, it's not mud at room temperature - hot sizzling mud with some stench. They tried dropping concrete balls to stop the flow. Stopped for 30 minutes on a particular day, then it resumed since, It continues to ooze mud as you read.

asked I, and yes, it seems it's a menace to the environment. Near her place too.

shall beef this posting up after my test on friday. Meanwhile, 3 links for your reading pleasure:

- Sidoarjo mud flow (Wiki)

all about buses

heard from SGForums that there will be another redeployment among SMRT bus fleets. From some old birds who are more familiar (eg, they know that TIB 425 R runs on Service 61, yeah you should get my meaning), it's actually an undeployment because it reverses much of the movements done in April.

i don't care about this micro redeployments - i hope SMRT/LTA can put up the 66 new standard length buses on revenue service soon. Newspapers proudly reported SMRT's CEO and her historical background and the "Better by Bus/Train" initiative in the past 2 months. Together with the initiative, they put big marketing dollars on incoming WAB Mercedes bus and launched it at University Cultural Centre of NUS.

the new fleet was supposed to arrive a month ago. Now? Nowhere to be seen. No press statements explaining the delay either. Not sure which organisation is holding things up, but it only goes to show the inefficiencies in either SMRT or LTA.

on another juicy news, a Service 168 bus captain lost his way from Bedok/Tampines to Woodlands. Apparently he missed the exit at Woodlands Ave 2, went to BKE, Woodlands Rd (?!) and ended up at Bt Panjang. There was a staff van guiding it, which was supposed to guide him from Woodlands Rd to BKE to Woodlands, but instead, went from BKE to Bt Panjang.

slap head... and know what?

passengers onboard tried in vain to persuade the captain to follow their directions, yet the captain insisted his way. Will passengers bring him to some funny places and rob him? Even if i don't factor in the nationality of the captain (Singaporean or Chinese national), i feel like laughing and crying. I believe the passengers onboard were fuming though.

reminded me of a similar incident a month ago on Service 161. Another captain also missed the exit, but he was familiar and smart enough to follow the signs at BKE. He got out at Woodlands Ave 3 and went via Marsiling MRT towards Woodlands interchange. I was inside, watching TV mobile while the captain apologised to everyone at the two MRT stations.

168 - yat lok fat. Literally, fat until Bt Panjang. Time to wack the captain and the guide.

life goes on..

the certification test is this friday. Have to add some oil..

i'm distracted by something that i shouldn't think about again. Cannot say too much. Maybe blog about it privately if i can find the appropriate words.

FOCUS, zm. HK, help me rid the demon in me!

vomited just now. Had a splitting headache after having McD's spicy nuggets. Was feeling unwell, yet i binged on fries and the hot nuggets. The headache refused to go even after a while. Decided to get home from office with quick relief, so i did the necessary. What happened was a 15 minute hell in the toilet. The chilli from the yucky [fill in your own blank] is so overpowering that it choked my nose, throat and made me throw up again and again.

of course being a good boy, i cleared up the mess. But the aftereffects remained for an hour, until i got home. Was coughing in the train because some chilli bits remained in my throat and nasal passage. Yet have to hold it.

argh. No more spicy nuggets.

ps: what is the demon? It's a devil. Think creatively.

more damages

today was actually to help WB settle his computer purchase - source for parts from PC Show and Simlim, then install them later. But there was a small problem that became a big problem - casing was out of stock. Entire Simlim didn't have it. So, postpone the whole plan. The only thing he bought was the Samsung T220 monitor.

then i went back to PC Show, made some damages. The Microsoft Mobile Memory Mouse 8000 was going $40 cheaper, so it made sense to get it. Got a pair of Kingston DDR2-800 2GB memory, since it was going for $120 in total too.

spent the evening at a wine appreciation workshop, invited by Teck. Learned substantial knowledge about wine, the glasses and some special information. Should try to follow up...

New RAMBO!

busy week

as foreseen, this PC Show is the busiest period for me. So many people around me buying stuff. Gy just got his beloved Sony Vaio after a long wait. Too bad he missed the 3 year warranty, but got reasonable amount of freebies, lah. Got it surprisingly, at Funan's juzz1. After some discussion, Edmund (salesperson) managed to match PC Show's offer, even giving a Microsoft Wireless Laser 6000 mouse together with the 4GB thumb.

as for me, i was evaluating 3 cameras (arranged in terms of highest price):

Chic looking T300

8 months old IXUS 860 IS (Image Stabilizer)

Fujifilm F100fd, 12mp @ unbeatable price

i liked the T300 due to the slim look, but in the end the features of F100fd got me. The night shots are (should) also better according to reviews. Went to MS Color @ AMK for the purchase.

commentary on servicemen deaths
while being so busy, there were news that 2 SAF servicemen passed away due to a possible cardiac arrest and heat exhaustion. I don't think i should spell out more details on the servicemen, since everything is available at Mindef's web portal.

while some people decry Mindef's training guidelines, we should take a look at the lifestyles of our young people these days. Many of us, especially after late 1980s, seldom exercise. Those who exercise take it too seriously, which I wouldn't advocate. Those who don't exercise really do not, and i'm a perfect example when i was in poly. There are many others i see currently, spending their spare time playing PSPs and what not. Such lifestyles aren't healthy at all. It's no wonder any training programmes can be fatal on a person who had not exercised much before enlistment, especially if the person insists on not sounding off.

we cannot be blaming Mindef all the time. My body belongs to myself, not property of the government or Mindef. Young men should take responsibility in improving their physical stamina, unless there are some inherent medical conditions. I hope NYP can implement a compulsory fitness programme into all curriculum to emphasize the need for fitness and study balance. The fitness programme should constitute a 2 module credit grade in the diploma, if we need to go to the extreme.

while in the army, some servicemen are willing to be physically fit despite having restrictions on how much they can do. It's admirable to see such fine examples, although more people try to end up in administrative positions using their medical condition(s) as an excuse. Then after NS, they attempt to catch up on fitness (read: put it bluntly, erase their administrative past) by taking up various sports. I would say, they missed out the most important lessons and camaraderie in their lives - a fruitful national service stint.

my words to those enlisting still stay - go in, work hard, play hard, know as much as friends as possible, enjoy your times together. Refine the art of socialising before you get out. Thinking of how to escape all the time will make 2 years very painful and turn yourself into a loser in all areas.

the golden sentence

i came across this sentence in clubsnap. Worth a read:

like our lives, if you have a decent girl, love her, marry her, treasure her, and she will bear you many cute children and have a happy family. Once in awhile a pretty girl walk pass, take a glance, fantasies a bit and forget about, else life will be tough - the other one, the new one, always seems better.

301th post + sapporo ramen miharu

this is my 301th post - hurray!

had a men's gathering at Sapporo Ramen Miharu, Gallery Hotel. Originally recommended by dave, the quality is still good. Our last visit was surprisingly nearly 2 years ago. 2 years ago, i guessed my (and others) life was quite a different one.

upsized our ramen by paying $2 more, and had a full meal. Then went for some booze at Little Bali, Gillman Village. The meal+beer+sight = fantastic evening...

2 flags stuck outside the restaurant.

They opened a dining area next to the original shop

Spicy ramen - HK's order

i think this sentence meant a lot to me, so i kept telling JH.

father's day dinner #1

as promised i went back to Zhou's Kitchen. But spent $30 on taxi plus a delay due to CTE's jam made the trip rather tiring for my parents.

my mum was coughing, didn't manage to have much too. And my bro, came late and left early. Sheeessh.

first time visit - pulau ubin + chek jawa

for the first time in 24 years ++, i set foot on Ubin. BUT the weather wasn't good, and today's rain was much longer than any other days recently. No regrets still...

chek jawa references:

- Chek Jawa (NUS)
- Tide information (tides should be low during your visit, to view the marine life on the seabed)
- Map to CJ, high resolution

we met at 8am, but i was late. So, we only started our breakfast at 8.30am. Then made our way down to the chaotic ferry terminal at 9am. By the time we reached CJ by foot, it was 11am. The tide was the lowest at 7.35am, highest at 2.56pm. 11am was still too late to view exciting stuff in CJ, namely the Coral Rubble, Seagrass Lagoon and Sandbar. Shall go back another time at the lowest tide possible...

although we missed out the greatest attractions in CJ, we're more familiar with Ubin now.

Our breakfast - Ipoh hor fun!

Look at the weather... shucks.

Welcome to UBIN!

Info Centre. But we skipped it and turned left...

Chose to walk. Reason... hehe.

Da Bo Gong

ZW went to buy 4D after the trip.

We followed a small road near the temple

And led us to Jln Ubin. The start of the trek

Everywhere were trees

Belatok Hut - catch a breath along Jln Ubin

My tummy!

Nice house

Split road - Jln Durian or Jln Sam Heng? Take the durian.

No durians seen, maybe due to the rain

Kelichap Hut - an important point

The road changes into clay and mud after Kelichap

Finally, reached the last hut before CJ

Didn't realise i donated blood until ZW told me

Your adventure starts in either of the 3 - we took the Jetty route 1st

Very nice tudor house built in 1930s - most decent building in Ubin

Inside the tudor house is an information centre

Went backwards, went onto Coastal Boardwalk

This is the map

Sexcited...

Rocky shores

The tide needs to be very low in order for the rubble to be seen...

A guided tour, but cannot go down because of the tide...

Another nice area, but completely submerged when we were there

Coastal BW is linked with the mangrove counterpart

Mangrove area - not very pleasing to nose...

Mangrove trees on both sides most of the time

Many creatures can be seen here

Jelawi Tower - go up, feel the sensation while at the top

Great view, not too hot too

Fig tree is even taller - "rong shu"

Came back to jetty via a van - too boring for a walk back

Ate lunch here

Taste was rather disappointing - damage was $38.40, quite alright

Ferry back... bye Ubin...

course progress

we just finished week 2 of the SAP course. It's almost complete because there are only 3 more chapters to complete, out of 15. Next week will be less intensive, because there are only 2 days before the course goes into revision mode. WX is covering the last few chapters, a first experience of its kind. Imagine a friend being your instructor. But we are professional students too alright =p

Dozing off...

the revision will be tough. ERP systems are hard to learn, in particular learning preconfigured business processes. But it's helpful in one way or another.. in future.

School of Computing, or School of Moth?

there were 2 similar looking moths outside our seminar room. 1 was "pasted" onto a noticeboard for 4 days, its cousin/sibling/whatever appeared on the above signboard on the 4th day. Both disappeared today, i think.

This nasi lemak stall is UP!

i ate at engineering's Technoedge for the first time. It's a milestone! And tried the famous nasi lemak stall. It's good because of the curry and chicken. The basic plate costs only $2.80.

my keyboard failed on me few days ago. The . and ] couldn't work. So i swapped in my spare Microsoft Comfort Curve keyboard. Guess what? The 2 keys worked, but my Insert/Page up/Home/arrow left and up went dead. Now two nice paperweights. Time to get a new one, but will just get a cheapo one. Found that i abuse my keyboards a lot....

this weekend seems busy. The coming week is even busier - PC Show 2008 is coming, and i'm helping myself and friends to make purchases of >$1.5k. Will be fun looking at people spend money.

feeling not so good

i'm feeling lousy on and off since the start of this week. It's due to a confluence of factors (this sentence satirically borrowed from the MSK ministerial statement). Let's examine some of them.

- sometimes, don't understand what is being taught in the SAP course. Some people in the classroom turn me off too. Need to start a fire to burn the papers, maybe i'd need wooden shoes too.

- stack of letters on my table. I burned all of them downstairs my block.

- someone. Not going to elaborate.

- not being able to attend a farewell dinner. I think i'm powerless to change my night duty, so i'm angry with myself.

the 2nd point was bullshit.

the 3rd point mattered to me the most actually. I understand stubbornness is the word, but...

as for the 4th point, shall treat my absence as saving money (those present, pay more, not my fault since it wasn't my choice to not turn up).

i think i sounded very blunt in this post. Even you mind, do you think i care?

off to sleep.

southern ridges

more information about Southern Ridges - NParks, Deadpoet's Cave (blog)

"The Southern Ridges comprise a 9-kilometre chain of green, open spaces spanning the rolling hills of Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park and Kent Ridge Park before ending at West Coast Park. It is an area steeped in history and is home to some of nature’s greatest gifts of flora and fauna. It is also one of the best spots in Singapore to catch panoramic views of the city, harbour and the Southern Islands."

caution - depending on where you start and end, it's more than 9km, and need around 3-5 hours to complete. A leisurely pace will require more time... and wear your favourite sportswear...

our plan (most people start from the other way round, then continue from NUS to West Coast Park) i feel this plan is better because the end point is near MRT/Vivo, instead of West Coast.

Straits Times' article

Map

1. NUS/Science Park
- SDE/Engineering for Mac
- School of Computing (COM1)
- NUS Business School (BIZ2)
- Prince George's Park Residences (PGPR)
- South Buona Vista Road
- Science Park 1

2. Kent Ridge Park
- Normanton Park
- Vista Park Open Space
- Canopy Walk

3. Telok Blangah Hill Park
- Flora Walk
- Alexandra Arch
- Forest Walk
- Hilltop Walk
- Henderson Waves

4. Mount Faber Park
- Faber Walk
- Jewel Box
- Marang Trail
- Harbourfront MRT

we started at NUS, planning to have breakfast at Faculty of Engineering's McD. But when we reached, McD was closed! The opening hours was 0800 to 2200 hrs, yet it's still closed at 0830! The rest of the canteens were closed too. Shit...

since i'm familiar with the campus, we passed through Central Library, Computing and Business blocks until BIZ2, where we walked along Research Link to PGPR. Luckily there was food at the canteen there, so i loaded myself with food first. Note for readers, Computing requires card access - use the pavement outside Computing for public visitors.

the walk from NUS through Science Park 1 to Normanton Park is rather boring though. The attractions starts from Canopy Walk...
